San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro will be giving the keynote speech Tuesday at the National Development Council's three-day training seminar in Washington, D.C.
It is the first speech he'll be getting paid to deliver.
The National Development Council works with cities on economic and community development, helping to revitalize areas that desperately need attention.
NDC Director Angela Butler, said the group works with city staffers to identify grants and other financing mechanisms to help turn projects into a reality.
With a field office in San Antonio, Butler said the NDC is familiar with Castro and his accomplishments.
"Obviously he's a rising star in the Democratic party," Butler said. "but in addition to that, National Development Council works with cities and municipalities across the country. San Antonio is one of the communities that we work in so we're very familiar with the work that he's done since being elected mayor in 2009,"
Butler said Castro is an example of what can be done in an urban city when there's a focus on redevelopment.
Castro has said his wife, Erica, a teacher, is the main breadwinner of the family. Castro earns $3,000 per year for being mayor, plus $20 per meeting he attends.
