South Side residents got some relief from flooding and from some of the related construction as officials announced the completion of the first section of the Sixmile Creek Flood Control Project.
The project is part of Bexar County’s $500 million capital improvement campaign, and the first section to open cost $2.7 million.
"There at S. Flores and Roosevelt you also have Stinson Field, the Harlandale Memorial Stadium, the Little Cowboys, the 5 Diamonds and you have that whole area that really just comes together," said Precinct 1 Bexar County Commissioner Chico Rodriguez. "West of Roosevelt and west of S. Flores and all that area of Deely and Vestal and Ackard and Ansley was a big issue."
Rodriguez said seven existing bridges cross over streets in the area, and the water floods those streets and then drains into the San Antonio River.
The first project raised the South Flores Bridge by 3.5 ft. and will soon offer bike lanes and protected sidewalks for greater pedestrian safety. The bridge will be completed in January. This and the remainder of the bridges working westward along Sixmile Creek represent a total of $20 million dollars in improvements.
