Math Test Scores In Grades 3-8 Won’t Affect Texas School Ratings

AUSTIN — Officials say they won’t include math scores on state-mandated standardized tests for students in third through eighth grade when calculating this year’s state accountability ratings.

Education Commissioner Michael Williams said in a statement Wednesday that he’s spoken to numerous teachers who made it clear students will need “a transition year” to adjust to new testing requirements.

He said that’s because tougher math testing standards adopted by the State Board of Education in 2012 are being implemented this year. Williams also announced in 2014 that students in fifth through eighth grades would need to pass a math exam in order to pass on to the next grade. But he has since agreed to suspend that requirement for the current academic year.
