The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists continues to grow its scholarship fund and has, for the second year in a row, passed a benchmark in providing funding to college students.
Each year the San Antonio chapter strives to bring more deserving students into the profession. Communications Officer Javier Flores said that last year the organization was able to award $25,000 for the first time in its history.
"Last year was the organization's 25th anniversary, so to sort of mark that milestone the association was able to give that $25,000 last year in 2012. So this year, in 2013, we're looking to continue that tradition," Flores said.
The scholarships will be awarded in amounts of up to $5,000 each to outstanding high school seniors, and college and university students in a communications field. That includes journalism but students in advertising, public relations, visual arts and multimedia also are encouraged to apply.
Flores said members of the organization also mentor students in the urban journalism program with San Antonio College.
"There's an opportunity for students who are studying at the college level - the community college level - to meet and interact with professionals within our organization and they can answer questions about their experience in journalism, so there's a lot of interaction with the students," Flores said.
Students who are enrolled full-time at a college for the 2013 fall semester are eligible to apply. The deadline is June 3, and the awards will be announced at the annual gala in July.
