Pride Center San Antonio has been looking for a permanent home since it gained nonprofit status in 2012. Its new location is at the corner of McCullough and Mistletoe. Pride Center Board Chair Richard Farias said the hope of having a physical location is to be the hub for San Antonio’s LGBT community.
“There’s 60 plus organizations that are either predominantly LGBT or solely LGBT in one way or another but many people don’t realize that," Farias said. "There wasn’t a common place to promote and have access to those.”
The pride center had a temporary location last year in the deco district on Fredericksburg Road next to the Woodlawn Theater but that location didn’t work out due to the cost to renovate it. The owner of the building canceled the lease.
"He was very kind, he understood our situation and just let us out of the lease with no issue," Farias said. "We never paid a dime for that space.”
Farias said the Pride Center will be able to offer resources to those who need support, those who are coming out or just want to get in touch with the gay and lesbian community.
“What we can do is provide a welcoming presence and a place where people can ask open questions about what is out there, if they’re looking for a group of people to meet up with who are similar.
The new space is a single office with an administrative area of a little more 300 square feet.This space is also likely to be temporary as the board is seeking a permanent location the pride center can own. An operation date has been set for May 1.
