River South Management Plan Continues Development Of Mission Reach

The San Antonio River Authority has secured the final approval it needs to move forward with a coordinated plan to develop the area in and around the Mission Reach.

Portions of the Mission Reach below Lone Star Blvd. to Loop 410 South opened to hikers and cyclists last year. Much like they’ve done on the Museum Reach north of downtown, SARA has been rebuilding the riparian habitat by installing native plants and other elements to encourage wildlife.

With all of that in place, San Antonio River Authority Gen. Manager Suzanne Scott went before Bexar County Commissioners this week for final sign-off on the River South Management Plan. She said it’s designed to build on and protect the county’s investment.

Both the city and the county have signed off on the plan, which over the coming years will manage events and river recreation, improve neighborhoods and continue to maintain parks and interfaces with the National Park Service and the San Antonio Missions.

“For example, if we have to look at connections from the neighborhoods into the river, how can that be done. Do we need better sidewalks, better bike trails that get people from the neighborhood to the project. And from the river recreation perspective, we want people to understand what the hours of operation are, how events will be handled, and so on,” Scott said.
