San Antonio Mastersingers Present Broadway/Opera Favorites in FREE ‘Theatrical Serenade”

WHAT: The San Antonio Mastersingers will present “Theatrical Serenade” Sunday, April 7, 2024 at 3 p.m. -- a FREE community concert featuring Broadway and Opera favorites -- in the Watson Fine Arts Center at St. Philip’s College on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

The concert directed by Dr. Yoojin Muhn and made possible through support from the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts and other donors, will feature the 120+ voice strong Mastersingers chorus, along with musicians from the San Antonio Philharmonic, the St. Philip’s College Choir, and soloists, including guest artists Rafael Moras and Sabatina Mauro.

“We are grateful to the Russell Hill Rogers Fund and our donors for their generous support, and for the opportunity to present this ‘love song’ to the San Antonio community in this beautiful East Side venue,” said Muhn. “Our program features familiar and favorite selections from the Broadway stage and well-known operas – music that will warm the heart and bring smiles to each face.”

Muhn adds, “The chorus is delighted to once again collaborate with musicians from the SA Phil, as well as welcome student singers from St. Philip’s College and guest artists Rafael Moras and Sabatina Mauro.”

RAFAEL MORAS
Hailed for his ability to communicate "…romance and heartbreak with his soaring tenor tones," by Broadway World, "...warm and ingratiating singing" by Opera News, and "…irresistible mix of Italianate and Latin passion…" by Classical Voice North America, tenor Rafael Moras is a rising star of the opera and symphonic pops worlds and proud San Antonio native making his San Antonio Mastersingers debut.
Rafael has performed as a featured soloist across the world with Grammy Award-winning jazz trumpeter Chris Botti for the An Evening with Chris Botti global tour, and he has also performed as soloist with the Houston Symphony, LA Philharmonic, Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, San Antonio Symphony, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Fort Worth Opera, Austin Opera, Opera Idaho, Santa Fe Opera, and Aspen Music Festival. Other highlights include debuts with Houston Grand Opera, Arizona Opera, Utah Opera, Annapolis Opera, and Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera.

Rafael is an alumnus of LA Opera's Domingo Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program and the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program for Singers. Other highlights his Seattle Opera debut as Tariq in the critically acclaimed world premiere A Thousand Splendid Suns, and his Minnesota Opera debut as Don José in Carmen, the directorial debut of acclaimed mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves.

SABATINA MAURO
Long Island mezzo-soprano, Sabatina Mauro, is praised for bringing music “vividly to life.” This season, Sabatina can be heard at The Dallas Opera, where she is an Education and Outreach Artist for various concerts and engagements, make her soloist debut in Carmina Burana with the Flower Mound Symphony Orchestra, and will perform her third principal role with Opera Arlington, where she is also the newly appointed Director of Community Engagement. Upcoming concert engagements include various solo appearances with the Highland Park Chorale, the Puccini Society of Dallas, and the Voices of Flower Mound.

Sabatina has recently performed a variety of roles, including Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, the role of Asha in the world premiere of Meow & Forever, Madame de la Haltière (Cendrillon), Dinah in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, Orfeo (Orfeo ed Euridice), the title role in Blitzstein’s Regina, Sorceress (Dido and Aeneas), Bianca (The Rape of Lucretia), Háta (The Bartered Bride), Estelle Oglethorpe (Later the Same Evening), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), and The Dog (The Cunning Little Vixen). Sabatina debuted the titular role of Rossini’s La Cenerentola with Red River Lyric Opera and appeared as Portman’s The Little Prince and Kaylee in Ching’s Speed Dating, Tonight! at Adelphi University, where she received her Bachelor’s degrees in Music and Psychology in 2018. She received her M.M. and G.A.C. in Vocal Performance and Opera from the University of North Texas under the tutelage of Dr. Stephen Austin.

Currently in its 79th season, San Antonio Mastersingers is an all-volunteer chorus of approximately 125 singers from the San Antonio community and surrounding areas. A 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization, Mastersingers delivers enriching experiences through the performance of choral repertoire that engages concert audiences through artistry, inspiration, and education; challenges member singers; and enables the organization to raise funds for charitable organizations and causes throughout the community.

Dr. Yoojin Muhn is music director for the San Antonio Mastersingers and serves as director of Choral Activities for the University of Texas at San Antonio.
