MACRI TALK - Chicago Latina Trailblazers: Testimonios of Political Activism

MACRI TALK - Chicago Latina Trailblazers: Testimonios of Political Activism

We're taking a virtual trip to Chicago! 🧳

Join us for a special conversation with Chicago Latina trailblazers! These influential Latina leaders are the first Latinas in their positions or founders of the first organizations of their kind in law, education, healthcare, and community organizing. Through their work, they have addressed issues facing their communities and shaped the history of the Windy City from the 1960s to today.

Our panelists' testimonios are featured in the anthology Chicago Latina Trailblazers: Testimonios of Political Activism (The University of Illinois Press) edited by Rita D. Hernández, Leticia Villarreal Sosa, Elena R. Gutiérrez. Dr. Leticia Villareal Sosa, one of the anthology’s editors, will introduce us to the project and our special guests.

Our special guests are:

⭐ Virginia Martínez, J.D.
Virginia Martínez was licensed to practice law in Illinois in 1975 and immediately began serving the Latino community. She practiced for 46 years, holding positions with various organizations including the Illinois Latino Family Commission, MALDEF, and Mujeres Latinas en Accion, and providing policy analysis and advocacy on behalf of Latinxs, women, and children. She now writes bilingual children's books.

⭐ Mary Gonzales
Mary Gonzales is a Mexican American Chicago native. She was a professional community organizer for 32 years and retired in 2012. She and her husband founded the Gamaliel Network to build powerful justice-seeking organizations and effective and successful leaders nationwide.

⭐ Leticia Villarreal Sosa, Ph.D.
Dr. Leticia Villarreal Sosa is Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development and Professor of Social Work. She is the Founding Editor in Chief of the International Journal of School Social Work. She is a national and international speaker focused on topics such as immigrant youth, equity and social justice, ethics, Latina leadership, truancy, mental health, and decolonizing curriculum.
