As more Americans understand the reality of our social isolation crisis, media interest in revisiting Putnam’s work has grown and with it, momentum for a rebound where awareness and advocacy for volunteering and civic engagement are critical. The SALSA Social Connectedness Workgroup focuses on ensuring that our older adults have access to a wide range of social, educational, volunteer, and training opportunities.

One of our projects this year is to spotlight the benefits of volunteer participation as it pertains to our social, emotional, and physical wellbeing. By building this awareness, we aim to boost volunteer recruitment efforts and to encourage older adults to explore finding meaning and purpose through giving back. The Join or Die documentary film ultimately encourages everyone to get involved in something. Aside from health benefits, the more we as a society are engaged and communicating with one another, the better we function as a democracy.

This screening, open to students, faculty, staff and the greater community, will offer an opportunity for intergenerational community discussion.
