Luminaria Lights Up The East Side With Art

Luminaria, which kicks off on Wednesday,  is four days of "enchantment and of fun. Some pretty mind-blowing projects," says Executive Director Kathy Armstrong.

Luminaria is never in the same location from year-to-year, and its ever-changing footprint now takes it to the near East Side. Armstrong says the ever-moving location keeps the event re-imagined every time.

"We always want to keep it fresh, we always want to keep it moving, keep it a little bit different.  So it starts off Wednesday with a mural unveiling; we have a mural partnership with Public Arts San Antonio. And those will be permanent murals here on the East Side. So that celebration is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Cherry Street."

Thursday night everything moves to the historic, funky Hayes Street Bridge, which has a great view of the downtown skyline.

"And that night we'll have about 10 different artists, again, all arts. Aerial dancers, poets, a DJ, visual artists, all doing what they do best. Hays Street Bridge is not your typical gallery or venue."

Friday night features the most events, music, and the biggest footprint.

"We'll be activating the Lockwood and Dignowity Hill Parks, and that's about 8 to midnight with about 20 different groups. A large central stage with different acts, lots of dance and visual art all around you. And also at the Carver Community Cultural Center, both of those stages will have phenomenal performances and dance."

There's a lot to seek so she suggests you study the entertainment schedule carefully.

"You can't miss any of it, but you will. There's no way you can see it all."

Then on Saturday is your opportunity to get up close and personal with the artists.

"Our Artist Brunch series will be when the attendee can sit down at a table with about 3 or 4 artists, and just really discuss what their concept is, how they produced it."

They also have six different workshops with featured artists.
