Pecha Kucha Turns 20 In A Big Way

A local group is hosting an event that has, let's face it,  one of the snappiest titles.

"PechaKucha.  It's a Japanese term for chit-chat."

Vicki Yuan is the chair of the event. And the term chit-chat kind of undersells what the event is about.

"It's a community lecture series where each presenter, who is from San Antonio, presents 20 images automatically timed at 20 seconds per image."

Yuan says this particular event in the ongoing series of Pecha Kucha nights is noteworthy for a pair of reasons.

"Yeah, this is our 20th event. It's hard to believe. And for the first time we're partnering with SA2020 to put on this event together at the Majestic Theatre, which is our largest venue to date."

SA2020 is the ad hoc group charged with helping plan the city's near-term future. The shared values of the two organizations seemed like a synchronous pairing at Pecha Kucha's 20th event.

"SA 2020 is at their halfway point toward their goal of enacting change by the year 2020."

The list of who's presenting on Tuesday night, Dece. 1 shows a huge variety.

"Well, we have Mayor Taylor, which is very exciting. We also have Laurie Ann Guererro, who is the Poet Laureate for San Antonio, and next year for Texas. David Heard, who is the co-creator of Tech Bloc. And Kylie Helterbrand will be our youngest Pecha Kucha presenter to date. She's graduating high school in the year 2020, and she's the first female quarterback in her school."

If you've never been, Yuan says here's what you can expect.

"It's very casual and informal. We have over 10 caterers that are all locally based restaurants and caterers."

Artist Cruz Ortiz will be screen-printing t-shirts, KRTU's JJ Lopez will be DJ'ing, and TV Anchor Randy Beamer will emcee.

"He's been with us this whole time and he's great."
