The San Antonio Public Library Foundation has issued a call to young writers in association with the San Antonio Book Festival.
"It’s a free event that runs all day downtown at the Central Library and the Southwest School of Art. We’re going to have more than 70 national and regional authors. Also there’s be a lot of fun activities out on the street," said San Antonio Book Festival Director Katy Flato. "We’re going to have a technology tent, a music tent. We’ll have food trucks, and even cooking demonstrations by some of our cookbook authors, so you can see directly from the chefs how to prepare their recipes. This is where book lovers want to come."
But an important part of the festival is the young writers contest.
"Ninth and tenth graders and 11th and 12th graders can submit their essay on the prompt of 'A River Runs Through It.' While the title sounds quite specific to San Antonio, that's not the case. It doesn't if have to be a real river; it's just a starting point for the writers."
The Texas Cavaliers provide cash prizes to winners and winners’ schools in each division, but there’s more to motivate the writers."
"Not only do they get cash prizes, but their story will be presented at the San Antonio Book Festival on April 5th and read by one of our featured authors," Flato said.
They have just extended the submittal deadline for the contest another week.
"Stories need to be submitted now before midnight Monday, January 13.
Flato and the book festival folks have high hopes for the students who submit essays and come to the event.
"Once they’re there a whole world will open up to them," Flato said. "They will be meeting writers who will inspire them, they will be seeing what happens when you are a successful writer. It’s a full day of fun literary activity."
