Update: The Texas A&M Board of Regents approved the university’s $450 million plan to redevelop Kyle Field into the biggest stadium in Texas (by seating capacity). Demolition work on the existing stadium is slated to begin in November this year, with plans for a grand opening in time for the 2015 football season.

Original post (May 1): Football is big at Texas A&M and it could be getting bigger – even bigger than it is at UT Austin.

The Texas A&M Board of Regents met today in College Station, where they’ve taken up and may vote later this afternoon on a expansion of Kyle Field.

“When complete, it will be the largest football stadium in the state of Texas,” said Sam Torn, co-chair of the Kyle Field Redevelopment Committee. “It will have the largest seating capacity in the SEC. It will undoubtedly produce the most intimidating environment in all of college football.”

Torn said that the stadium would hold 102,000 Aggies. Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium on the UT campus has a capacity of just over 101,000 – currently the largest seating capacity in the state for football, college or pro.

A news conference on the A&M campus is planned for this evening at 6 p.m.
