San Antonio’s Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA has thrown out a lifeline to an overwhelmed hospital near the Texas-Mexico border which saw its coronavirus caseload spike after Gov. Abbott reopened the state in May.

The South Texas Veterans Healthcare System is trying to avoid a broad shutdown as the COVID-19 pandemic waxes and wanes.

With the advent of the novel coronavirus in March, the South Texas VA — along with other VA facilities around the country — postponed many face-to-face appointments to prevent the virus from spreading.

Starting Jan. 1, Joint Base San Antonio will allow more people through its gates to access commissaries and exchanges, in addition to facilities like golf courses, clubs and movie theaters.

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System is celebrating its 20th annual Women’s Health Week, with a focus on getting women to utilize the services available to them at VA.

The U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie visited San Antonio Monday for a tour of the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital. The trip was part of a pledge he made during his confirmation hearings to “walk the post” assessing different VA campuses.
