The Justice Department announced indictments against two Chinese nationals Thursday.
Zhu Hua and Zhang Shilong are suspected of stealing hundreds of gigabytes of research, intellectual property and technology from more than 45 companies and agencies in 12 countries on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security, according to the indictment.
While China has denied the charges, it isn’t the first time it has been accused of stealing intellectual property or economic data to benefit the country. Five Chinese government officials were indicted in 2005 on similar charges, marking the beginning of a strategy some intelligence officials call “name and shame.”
Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, talks about the strategy as well as legislative actions being taken to address cyber theft and security. Hurd, a former CIA analyst, is now Texas congressman for District 23, which includes part of San Antonio. He sits on the House Intelligence Committee.
