2025 Texas Legislative Session

Texas has some of the nation’s most restrictive policies on syringe exchange programs. But for years, Bexar County has been the exception and is authorized to operate a needle exchange program intended to prevent the spread of HIV, hepatitis and other infections among people who inject drugs. Efforts at the Texas legislature to expand the program to other counties in Texas have so far failed.

Last session Texas GOP lawmakers passed a drag bill, a ban on gender-affirming surgery and other legislation targeting the LGBTQ community. With the Republican Party growing more conservative after the election, experts say it's likely the theme will continue.

Now that the 2024 election is over in Texas, the issue of protecting ballot secrecy is receiving renewed attention in the courts and the legislature.

The top legislation the majority of commissioners would like to see pushed through the 89th legislative session would include a bill ultimately designed to fight local traffic congestion.

Immigration and school vouchers seem high on the priority list.
