For musicians and patrons of the San Antonio Symphony, the last few weeks have seen a dramatic turn of events as troubling management and union contract negotiations raised many questions about the symphony's future.
After last week's announcement that the current season would be suspended entirely, the Symphony Society of San Antonio rescinded the decision days later and now plans to move forward with an abbreviated set of concerts.
Although the recent reprieve is a hopeful sign, it may only be a temporary fix to the San Antonio Symphony's long history of financial stresses and need for long-term stability.
What issues will the orchestra need to work through next? How can a different funding model help save the San Antonio Symphony?
Guests:
- Craig Sorgi, first violinist in the San Antonio Symphony and chair of the Musicians of the San Antonio Symphony players’ association
- Brian Petkovich, assistant principal bassoonist of the San Antonio Symphony and secretary/treasurer of American Federation of Musicians Local 23
