New York was not the hub of art at the beginning of the 20th century. That fact would come to change, but only after American Art along with the country ascended after World War II. Helping to craft that ascendency was Edith Halpert, an independent gallery owner whose ambition for American art to take center stage was paramount. According to Lindsay Pollock, editor of Art In America magazine she would stop at nothing to sell art to the American elite even at a time no one was interested.
"She was kind of a fearless person. She would send a letter to Abby Rockefeller to Henry Ford 'Can I sell you a this? Can I sell you a that."
Pollock wrote a biography of Halpert charting her 40-year career.
