The Source: Renewing Alamo Plaza

Last night the Alamo Plaza Advisory Commission met to discuss the future of the most famous building in San Antonio, which included how to improve the experience of a huge tourist draw while improving historical aspects of the grounds. One could say the project is 178 years in the making.

The city voted on March 6, the anniversary of the end of the 13-day siege of the Alamo, to create a process and strategy to at some point have a comprehensive master plan of the Alamo grounds. This idea of improving the Alamo grounds isn't a new one; the city studied it back in 1994, but with few results.

District 1 Councilman Diego Bernal wants something "drastically different" than what we have today.

What do you want to see happen to the Alamo grounds?

Guests:

  • Howard Peak, former mayor of San Antonio, sits on the current commission and was involved in the 1994 study.
  • Steve Tomka, chief archeologist at Raba-Kistner Consulting. Former director of the Center for Archeological Research at the University of Texas San Antonio.
  • Marise McDermott, president and CEO of the Witte Museum, also Tri-chair on the Commission.

*This is the second segment in the August 27 edition of The Source, which airs at 3 p.m. on KSTX 89.1 FM. Audio from this show will be posted by 5:30 p.m.
