The Source: Fuel Spill Into San Antonio River Leaves Questions

San Antonio River Authority

Earlier in the month a jet fuel spill from the Calumet Specialty Products refinery left the community asking questions about the safety of the plant. The second in two months, the operator announced changes to the railcar loading area and other upgrades to prevent future spills.

The San Antonio River Authority has asked for a more organized response in the future, and expressed disappointment in how the organization handled the incident. According to the San Antonio River Authority, Calumet will be asked to reimburse the agency for the cleanup efforts.

The refinery has a history of noncompliance through a series of different owners according to the San Antonio Express-News. In the piece, writer, Scott Huddleston details 40 years of regulatory issues against multiple owners.

With a new pipeline facilitating exponential growth in their workload, is the spill the second of many or has the company prepared properly?
