The Source: The (presumptive) Governor's Race | CyberStar Program

In the first segment:

This afternoon state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, is speculated to announce her run for governor of Texas. Yesterday, Texas Lyceum, a state nonprofit and nonpartisan leadership organization, released a poll that among other things showed only an 8 point difference between Davis and GOP frontrunner and Attorney General, Greg Abbott.

Half of the respondents were still undecided, so what can we take from the poll?

The big question in mind is: Can Davis win? Certainly our litigation-friendly Attorney General has some known negatives from being in the spotlight so long, but will it make a difference? And once the media begins to vet Davis, how will the polling change? What role could a Davis run make for Texas Democrats?

Joining us to talk about this is Professor of Political Science at St Mary's University Henry Flores and Rice University Political Science Department Chair, Mark Jones.

In the second segment:

Each of the past four years teams from across the country competed in the National High School Cyber Defense Competition, CyberPatriot. San Antonio has a healthy contingent of school-aged cyber warriors, often times being over represented in the competition's semi-final round by a margin of 300 to 400 percent, according to Chris Cook a local organizer.

Participation has been increasing as well with 21 San Antonio Teams the first year and an expected 75 teams this year.

"At this time, [San Antonio has] more teams registered than any other city in the US," wrote Cook in an email.

The goal of these programs is twofold, to introduce young people to IT and STEM career paths as well as to ready them for careers specifically in cyber security.

This is the first year they will be holding a middle-school competition and a five-week training seminar began last weekend.  Joining us to talk about the programs are CyberStar Director, Joe Sanchez, and student trainers, Deirdre Carillo and Stephan Casas.
