AT&T is firmly in the high-speed Internet race with Google as the company announced it is exploring a network expansion for its GigaPower service, which offers speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second.
Renée Flores, regional VP of external affairs at AT&T, said San Antonio is one of 25 metro areas the company is looking at for the expansion.
"The gigabit speeds would allow you to download 25 songs in one second, your favorite TV show in three seconds, and a high-definition movie in just under 36 seconds," Flores said.
AT&T’s announcement said the company is interested in working with communities that are willing to offer solid investment cases and policies.
San Antonio City Council earlier this month passed an ordinance that would allow AT&T to lease city property for “network huts” to house networking equipment. The city announced that it would provide the same deal for Google in February, when Google announced that San Antonio is on the short list of nine potential cities where it will install Google Fiber technology.
Google has not yet announced which cities will get Google Fiber and no final decision has been made by AT&T.
