The Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics

The Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics, part of the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center, sparks empathy and compassion in the next generation of doctors, nurses and other health professionals who will soon serve communities in San Antonio and beyond. The Center was founded in 2002 by noted physician-author Abraham Verghese, M.D., who served as its first director. He was succeeded in 2007 by Ruth Berggren, M.D. Today, the Center leads programs in ethics and professionalism, literature and art, global health and community service learning in its efforts to shape community-connected healers for San Antonio, South Texas and the world. “In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”

--Albert Schweitzer
