Free Google Fiber Added To Public Housing

Housing and Urban Development
/

The Department of Housing and Urban Development and Google Fiber are working together to provide free ultra-high speed internet service to public housing units in several cities around the country, including San Antonio.

This is being done through the ConnectHome Initiative, which is a public-private collaboration to narrow the digital divide for families with school-age children who live in HUD-assisted housing. But It’s more than just hooking up the internet.

“There are a couple partners that I know are doing work as part of this initiative,” said HUD Secretary Julian Castro. “One of them for instance is Common Sense Media that’s going to be out there with its took kit on digital literacy, helping to have families understand how to make the most use of the Internet.”

The service is being launched in Kansas City. No timeline has been established for when it will be installed in San Antonio public housing.
