Texas Inmate, 67, Set To Die For 4 Slayings 31 Years Ago

LIVINGSTON, Texas — At age 67, Lester Bower will be the oldest death-row inmate to be executed in Texas if his lethal injection is carried out as scheduled this week.

Bower is scheduled for execution Wednesday for the deaths of four men at a ranch near Dallas more than 31 years ago. Bower insists he’s innocent and says he went to the ranch to buy an ultralight airplane in October 1983.

But Grayson County prosecutors say he killed the men and stole the plane. Prosecutors built their case around circumstantial evidence, and say Bower lied to investigators when his name showed up in the phone records of one of the victims.

Bower’s attorneys have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the execution. State attorneys say 30 years of litigation is enough. (AP)
