Gov. Greg Abbott stopped in San Antonio Friday to address the American Legion Department of Texas at its 100th annual convention.
Abbott outlined a campaign policy proposal to increase veteran employment.
“It begins with lowering the barriers for veterans entering the workforce,” Abbott said. “As we know, veterans already have the training, the work ethic and the leadership skills to be able to succeed at almost anything in life. They just need better access to the tremendous economic opportunities that exist in Texas.”
Abbott’s proposal would cut taxes for veteran business owners and offer incentives to employers who hire veterans. It would also waive certain licensing fees for military spouses who move to Texas.
Abbott plans to make the proposal part of his agenda during the next legislative session, according to Stephen Chang, the governor’s press assistant.
In June, the governor announced an initiative to give Texas Enterprise Fund grantees up to one thousand dollars per veteran hire.
