The communications director for San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor has confirmed for TPR that Taylor plans to join the race for mayor in May.

Taylor was appointed as mayor when Julian Castro left the office to become Secretary of HUD.

The confirmation of her candidacy follows months of speculation as to whether she would join the field of at least 11 other contenders who have already filed.

State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, State Rep. Mike Villareal and former Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson are among the best known candidates Taylor will face.

Shelley Kofler is Texas Public Radio’s news director. She joined the San Antonio station in December 2014 and leads a growing staff that produces two weekly programs; a daily talk show, news features, reports and online content. Prior to TPR, Shelley served as the managing editor and news director at KERA in Dallas-Fort Worth, and the Austin bureau chief and legislative reporter for North Texas ABC affiliate WFAA-TV.
