Voter ID Reminder For 2014 Primary Election

Voter ID certificates are now available at Texas DPS offices and county elections offices are working to get voters properly registered for next month’s early voting in the primary elections.

The Electronic Identification Certificate is the required document for all voters who do not already have a state or U.S. photo ID. According to the voter ID law that went into effect in November, every voter must show an acceptable form of ID to be allowed to cast their ballot.

Accepted photo IDs include:

  • Texas drivers license or Texas-issued personal ID card
  • Texas concealed handgun license
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. Citizenship Certificate or Certificate of Naturalization
  • U.S. Military ID card with photo

All IDs must be current or less than 60 days expired
Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen said voters with minor name discrepancies on their two forms of ID will be allowed to sign an affidavit at the polling site.

“The voter will be asked, ‘Do you want to change it now?’ Or where they sign their name, if they qualify to vote, there’s a block there that’s an affidavit that says basically, 'I swear I’m this person,'" Callanen said.

Callanen said her department is working to correct voter registration cards now to avoid delays during the large-turnout general election in November.

“Because we know that if you have 500 people vote and you take an extra minute with each one of those people, you’re going to back up the line,” she said.

The primary election is March 4, with early voting from Feb. 18 to 28. The last day to register to vote is this Monday, Feb. 3.
