The offices of governor, attorney general and lieutenant governor will remain in conservative hands as Texas Democrats continue their near-three-decade losing streak in statewide contests.

The former children’s court Judge will trade in the bench for the Commissioner’s Court dais in January. Bexar County voters awarded the Democrat nearly 59% of the vote.

In his two elections, Gonzales proved adept at navigating tides of national issues to victory. In 2018 he unseated incumbent Nico LaHood in his Democratic primary, running on a police accountability and reform platform. His challenger this time, Republican Marc LaHood (Nico’s brother) was swimming against the tide of abortion access.

Democrats have won both seats on the State Board of Education that represent Bexar County.

Marisa Perez-Diaz has been elected to the state board for a fourth term. She represents District 3, which includes most of Bexar County. It stretches south to the Rio Grande Valley. Melissa Ortega has been elected to represent District 1, which stretches from western Bexar County to El Paso.

Both State Board of Education seats are considered reliably Democratic. But Republicans continue to have a strong majority on the board, which determines what students across Texas learn in school.

School bonds pass

Bexar County voters approved school bonds for both East Central and Judson ISD.

Both school districts plan to use the money for security upgrades and new schools. They’re projecting enrollment growth over the next few years and had similar bonds on the ballot last year, but those bonds failed.

East Central’s bond is for $240 million. Judson’s bond package is for $345 million.
