Texas officers are still erecting border wire and some Republicans are calling on Gov. Greg Abbott to defy the high court.

Four members of the unit working on Gov. Greg Abbott’s border mission have been punished after whistleblowers reported the surveillance operation violated long-standing rules against state-run spy operations.

The Texas Military Department isn’t identifying the Guard member or providing details about the Saturday shooting. The man who was shot in the leg said he was working out near the river.

It’s the first-known incident where a soldier has shot a migrant since the mission began. The injury is non-life threatening.

A document obtained by The Texas Tribune and Army Times shows that the Vietnam-era M113 armored personnel carriers will be sent to 10 locations along the Texas-Mexico border.

The soldier is the 10th known Texas Guard member linked to the mission to die since its rapid expansion began in September 2021.

The call for action from Texas Democrats comes as another service member based in the city of Pharr survived a suicide attempt on Sunday, according to an incident report obtained by Army Times and The Texas Tribune.
