Marisa Ortiz, Intercultural Talent Consultant is honored to present for DreamWeek 2023: World Music celebration by Austin-based Sufi band Atash; partnering with San Antonio World Dance Leaders: Lopita Nath in Indian Classical Kathak; Yisheiri Fuentes in Belly Dance; Genevieve Obregón in Flamenco and Mary Jane Hernández in Folklórico.
From north India in the form to Kathak, the dance form travelled with our ancestors throughout the Middle East and North Africa, becoming what we know as Belly Dance. It arrived to the Iberian Peninsula to become Flamenco, and with the arrival of the Europeans to the Americas, it became Folklorico and son jarocho in the Gulf of Mexico state of Veracruz. Join us to appreciate the connection between our shared dance traditions, all tied by the thread of Sufi music by Atash and their harmonic World Music tunes that build momentum and move our souls.
