This year’s symposium will feature presentations by distinguished scholars on the work of Chicana novelist Helena María Viramontes. Invited presenters include: Cordelia Barrera. Ph.D. (Texas Tech University), Mary Pat Brady, Ph.D. (Cornell University), Jody Marin, Ph.D. (Texas A&M Kingsville) and Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs, Ph.D. (Seattle University). The Madrid Lecture by Viramontes is at 5 p.m. Book signing to follow. The symposium and Madrid Lecture are free and open to the public. Registration is required due to limited space. Viramontes is the author of The Moths and Other Stories and two novels Under the Feet of Jesus and Their Dogs Came With Them. She also co-edited with Maria Herrera Sobek, two collections: Chicana (W) rites: On Word and Film and Chicana Creativity and Criticism. A recipient of the John Dos Passos Award for Literature and a United States Artist Fellowship, her short stories and essays are broadly anthologized and her writings adopted for classroom use and university study.
