San Antonio Mastersingers Celebrate 80th Anniversary
with a Season of Timeless Masterworks
“TIMELESS REFLECTIONS” set for 7:30pm SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12
at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower
Concert to feature works by Thompson, Conte, Muhn, and The Beatles
WHAT: The San Antonio Mastersingers, under the baton of music director Dr. Yoojin Muhn and accompanied by pianist Dr. Joeng-Eun Lee, present “Timeless Reflections,” the first concert of their 80th Anniversary Season at the historic Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 7:30pm.
The concert features works that awaken imagination, bring joy, and evoke memories. Robert Frost’s beloved poems are set to music by Randall Thompson in Frostiana – including “The Road Not Taken,” and “Choose Something Like a Star.” Crossing several cultural boundaries, the chorus will present music from Mexico – David Conte’s Three Mexican Folk Songs; from Korea –Doraji, a well-known Korean folk song arranged by Mastersingers music director Dr. Yoojin Muhn (her first published work); and South Africa – Tshela Moya/Ke Nna Yo Morena, arranged by South African composer and conductor, Michael Barrett. The concert concludes with timeless favorites from The Beatles, including Hey Jude and Let it Be.

The 2024-25 Season also includes a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the San Antonio Philharmonic, Handel’s Messiah, Carmina Burana with the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio Philharmonic, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Mid-Texas Symphony, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” with the San Antonio Philharmonic.
ALSO: The Mastersingers is an all-volunteer chorus numbering approximately 125 singers whose mission is to provide our community with life-enriching experiences through the performance of choral repertoire that engages the audience, challenges the singers, and supports the development of inspirational and educational opportunities through outstanding musical performances. The chorus has performed in such locations as New York City’s Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall, and major venues in Italy, Portugal, Spain, and France. In June 2022 the Mastersingers embarked on a concert tour to the United Kingdom, which culminated with a choral evensong at the venerable St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The Mastersingers returned to New York’s Carnegie Hall in June 2023 where they performed Mozart’s Requiem under the baton of Dr. Yoojin Muhn. The chorus embarked on a tour to Austria and the Czech Republic in the Summer of 2024.
