“San Anto, te amo – Running with History” by Martín Rodríguez is the 3rd edition of an ongoing series of performances involving physical interactions at iconic locations, exploring the nature of place and time.
Martín Rodríguez asks, “Why walk through history when you can run,” and asserts that the race does not always go to the swiftest, but to those who keep on running.
“San Anto, te amo” is a moving meditation on history, place, and the body in motion. Filmed in slow motion across specific sites in San Antonio, Texas, each performance traces a dialogue between the city’s layered past and its enduring connection to Mexico. Wearing Huaraches acquired in Mexico—a gesture of cultural continuity, appreciation, and consciousness—I run through spaces that hold memory, migration, and transformation.
The act of running becomes both ritual and resistance, a way to traverse invisible borders and to feel history through the soles of the feet. In slowing time, the camera expands each gesture, each breath, revealing the tension between movement and stillness, endurance and pause. The body becomes a temporal bridge—linking histories, landscapes, and identities that have long been intertwined yet divided.
“San Anto, te amo” is a love letter to a city shaped by crossings—of rivers, cultures, and eras. It invites viewers to see running not as escape, but as return: a rhythmic affirmation of belonging, a choreography of remembrance, and a play with time itself.
