Opening Reception for "A Retrospective of an Artist"

Opening Reception for "A Retrospective of an Artist"

The life and works of the late San Antonio artist Elizabeth Rodriguez will be honored during a memorial exhibition, “A Retrospective of an Artist” that opens with a reception from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, July 26 at Bihl Haus Arts Gallery, 2803 Fredericksburg Road. The exhibition runs through Aug. 16.

Rodriguez, who was also an arts instructor at Bihl Haus Arts for more than 10 years, died Dec. 14, 2024, from lung and brain cancer. She was 56.

The community is invited to honor the life and artistic legacy of Rodriguez through this heartfelt retrospective, lovingly curated by her husband, Andy Villarreal, said Bihl Haus Arts executive director Nick Gonzales.

“Elizabeth's passing has left an immeasurable void in our artist and teaching community,” Gonzales said. “Her work, her mentorship, and her generous spirit touched countless lives. This exhibition celebrates her artistic journey and the profound impact she made on all who knew her. Through works spanning her career, we remember Elizabeth not only as a gifted artist but as a beloved teacher and friend whose influence will continue to inspire future generations.”

The exhibition will feature several major paintings of Rodriguez’s that Villarreal has selected to be on display. It is his hope, he said, that this show will acknowledge his wife as the brilliant and gifted artist that she was.

“She was my soul mate, and the best artist in town,” Villarreal said. “Although she was an accomplished artist and a lot of people recognized her work, she never got the full recognition she deserved. Had she lived another 20 years or so, I am sure she would have produced even more outstanding works.”
