Margo Sawyer: The Presence and Absence of Color

The Neidorff Art Gallery at Trinity University is pleased to present Margo Sawyer: The Presence and Absence of Color with an accompanying artist lecture as part of the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series, made possible by Jane and the late Arthur Stieren of San Antonio. The exhibition is on view January 18 – February 11, 2023.

The Presence and Absence of Color is an installation created specifically for Trinity’s Neidorff Art Gallery. Comprised of large sculptural works, etched mirrors, colored acrylic and glass, reflective orbs, and myriad other objects, the installation explores the relationship between space, light, pattern, and form. The Presence and Absence of Color creates an experience of contemplation, reflection, and transcendence for the viewer.

Margo Sawyer was born in the United States and brought up in England where she received most of her formal education. Sawyer studied foundation at the Brighton Polytechnic Faculty of Art and Design; she then received a B.A. Honors Degree from the Chelsea School of Art in London. Her interest in contemporary American art led her back to the United States where she attended the sculpture program at Yale University and received an M.F.A. in 1982. Sawyer is currently a Professor of Sculpture and Extended Media in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Texas at Austin.

Sawyer's work has been exhibited both nationally in New York, Los Angeles, New Haven, Houston, Dallas, Austin, and internationally in the United Kingdom, Italy, India, Japan, and recently, the United States Embassy in Pristina, Kosovo. She is represented by Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Sawyer has received numerous honors and awards for her work, such as the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, the 84th Legislature Texas State Artist of the Year, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award, Japan Foundation Fellowship, Fulbright Senior Research Grant to Japan, American Academy in Rome Fellowship, and a Fulbright Grant to India.
