Texas Public Radio documented the evolution of U.S. immigration policy in 2019, from President Trump's emergency declaration over border wall funding to the implementation of Migrant Protection Protocols. TPR’s reporting focused on how these policies impact people living on both sides of the border as well as those passing through.
TPR is based in San Antonio, known as the “Gateway to the Border.” It’s where almost every migrant who crosses the Rio Grande passes through on their way to their destinations in the US. We reported on the humanitarian efforts in the Alamo City while expanding our reporting in the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico with the addition of Reynaldo Leaños Jr based in Mission, Texas.
TPR reporters also traveled to the border city of El Paso in August 2019 to cover the Walmart shooting. These stories were edited for air on NPR newscasts and several NPR programs, including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Weekend Edition.
