Janoska Ensemble Set For Two Free Concerts

An up-n-coming musical performance group is coming to the Alamo City.  They come from Bratislava, but now live in Vienna. Their style is really intense.

"We are the Janoska Ensemble. We are four persons," says Julius Darvas, from the streets of New York City. "We have piano. We have two violins and a double bass. And we arrived from Vienna."

They started their first American tour in style, with a gig at a legendary nightclub.

"We start our tour in New York at Birdland. We had a great concert and a lot of fun after the concert."

The Janoska Ensemble wants to break down the barriers between musical genres. They are outstanding classical players, but then you begin to hear some tango.

"Yeah, we have some tango in there, but also jazzy elements from the jazz music. Of course, Latin American music. And it's a very good combination.  Our view was to create a new music style. And we create the Janoska style."

The name Janoska is the last name of the three brothers who make up the band. Julius is the fourth member, and he married into the family.

"Yeah, I married the cousin of them, so I'm the brother-in-law. Yeah, so we are a family together, it's a family company."

Their shows are fairly improvisational.

"In our music, on stage, the new pieces are created because we always use improvising. And every concert is another one, so new pieces are born onstage."

Musical Bridges Around the World is bringing them in for a Friday concert at Boerne's Patrick Heath Public Library, and one at San Fernando Cathedral on Sunday. Both are free.

"Texas, we are coming!"
