Greatest Voice You Didn't Know You Knew Coming To San Antonio

A voice you probably already know returns to San Antonio on Friday night. Probably most known for the female accompaniment to the Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger's singing of  Gimme Shelter -- what does that feel like when she hears the haunting beginning chords of the song?

She took a deep breath before she answered. "Oh gosh...every time I hear it I feel like it takes me into kind of a sacred place. It feels like home. To just be with Mick and to give him what he needs for that song is just magical!"

Her name is Lisa Fischer and she has toured with the Stones as a backup singer for more than the last quarter century. Fischer also starred in the Academy Award-winning 20 Feet From Stardom, a documentary about backup singers, which opened unexpected doors for her.

"After 20 Feet From Stardom came out I got a call from Trent Reznor to do the Nine Inch Nails tour."

She's also worked extensively with Chris Botti, Sting, Aretha Franklin and many others. But the person she credits the most for her career ...

"Luther Vandross for sure. He was perfect. His energy was perfect for the place I was at."

Vandross employed her as a backup singer for years, and he was a dear friend and mentor as well. She's coming to the Carver Cultural Center on Friday night. What can people expect?

"I'll do songs from my CD. I'll do some Stones songs, but they'll be arranged and deranged differently," she chuckled. And her 3-piece band? She described them one by one.

"Yeah, they're lovely. I love them," she said laughing.
