Fasching, Film And Super Women Singers: Your Weekend's Here!

There's more going on this weekend than a football game. First off, on Saturday night, get your German on!

"Everyone will be dressed up in these elaborate costumes."

Ryan Lloyd's talking about BeethovenMaennerchor's Fasching celebration. Don't know what that is? He explains.

"It sounds foreign but it's actually something that we all know very well, which is Mardi Gras. So, it's a German Mardi Gras."

Southtown's Beethoven Maennerchor is a place for all things German.

"All this is dedicated to German heritage in San Antonio. This is a time to celebrate in grand style right before everyone has to button up and be good for lent."

If you can't make it to that, hit the road to Fredericksburg to the Fritztown Cinema for a free and fascinating film called Imba Means Sing. Here's Chad Mathews of Hill Country Film Society.

"It's a really great film. You follow the lives of a few kids who leave their home country of Africa and the travel to the United States and they sing in the African Children's Choir."

Education's not free in Uganda, but the kids get paid to sing and in that fashion, afford their education.

"It just gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside when you watch it."

Then on Sunday these ladies can really belt it out. They're Las Tesoros de San Antonio. The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center's Graciela Sanchez.

"Women who performed in the 40s, 50s and 60s in San Antonio and South Texas and throughout South America. They were part of a history that's kind of been lost."

A history of San Antonio women singers who made it to the big time.

"Rita performed with Nat King Cole, Celia Cruz."

That's Rita Vidaurri, who will perform two shows on Sunday, at 3 and 6PM, along with Blanca Rosa and Beatriz Llamas. Can you afford it? Sanchez says you can.

"The best part--we always charge a minimal amount of money--so it's five dollars."
