The weekend’s upon us; if you’re looking for fun things to do, here are a few.
Bombasta is the multi-genre beat and horn-driven big band. They’re playing at the Empire on Friday, and this one is a big show.
"We’ll be doing some video mapping projection onto some pyramids that we’re going to have up on stage with us. We're excited about adding the visuals to this performance, having the theater, and really, just trying to give that cosmic, psychedelic Chicano experience that can only happen here in San Antonio,” said Bombasta front man Robert Livar.
Bombasta is a band that a lot of people like to dance to, and that will be possible at the Empire.
“The first half of the theater has all seating removed so there’ll be plenty of space to dance and move around.”
And here’s a twist: There’s a pre-show bike ride starting at La Botanica vegetarian Mexican restaurant. Once bikers get to the Empire they'll find bike racks out front with bike valets to guard them throughout the performance. Livar gives listeners another reason to take their bike instead of their car.
"Best of all if you ride a bike to the show, you get in half price.”
Meditation at the San Antonio Museum of Art
Then on Saturday morning at the San Antonio Museum of Art—here’s something different.
“Every Saturday at the museum at 10:15 sharp we have our meditation in the Japanese Gallery. It’s led by Cristina Salgado. So it does create a very calming environment,” said SAMA's Moira Allen.
Cristina is a docent at SAMA, but she's also spent a lot of time studying meditation, including an 8-year period in India. There at SAMA she leads a 45-minute meditation every Saturday morning.
"It’s a really relaxing way to start your weekend" says Allen.
Leon Russell
Then on Sunday hit the road to Luckenbach where Leon Russell plays the Luckenbach Dance Hall on Sunday night. This is the same hall where Jerry Jeff Walker and Gary P. Nunn recorded the iconic Viva Terlingua album. A huge performer in a small venue in a legendary town. Doesn’t get much better than that.
