New Film About The "Curious" George Washington Birthday Celebration In Laredo

Local PBS station KLRN is putting on a screening that has an interesting twist.

"We are one of 95 communities around the United States that are holding film screenings throughout the year," said Marketing VP Katrina Kehoe. "They are Independent Lens films...(Independent Lens is a recurring PBS documentary series)…and we are encouraging the community to come out with us, screen these programs, before they broadcast on KLRN."

The Independent Lens film they're showing is called "Las Marthas," a film shot in Laredo. That film will be shown in each of those 95 communities Katrina mentioned. But locally, the event doesn’t stop with just the screening.

"We’re going to have the two filmmakers with us, Cristina Ibarra and Erin Ploss Campoamor," Kehoe said.

They also have three other key people from the film there as well.

"So We’re going to have a panel discussion with five people whose heart and soul is in this film," Kehoe said.

"Las Marthas" centers around Laredo’s curious George Washington birthday celebration wherein young women dress in amazingly elaborate and expensive gowns to re-enact a ball thrown by the country’s first first lady.

"The screening event is going to happen at the Santikos 14 Embassy Theater," Kehoe said. "It’s happening this Thursday. The doors open at 6:30 and the screening will start at seven. The film will run for ninety minutes and the panel discussion is after that."

The screening is free to attend and open to the public.

"That is part of what Community Cinema does," Kehoe said. "We don’t want anybody to feel that they can’t be a part of our conversation."
