How have your New Year’s resolutions held up? Here is a place where some of you might actually be able to keep them. If one of your resolutions was to re-connect with the artsy you, or to try and tap into that "right brain" of yours, there’s the Southwest School of Art.
"It’s never too late to be creative," said Southwest’s Drawing and Painting Department Chair Vincent Valdez.
Valdez is encouraging San Antonians to come down and maybe find the rest of who they are.
"So the classes range from advanced figure drawing whether it’s with the live model or the human skeleton. So the students here will really come across a wide range of instruction," he said.
Ceramics, glass, jewelry-making, photography, fibers and textiles, and others.
"We’re offering classes that cover a really wide range of subjects," Valdez said.
The Southwest School of Art occupies both the historic old Ursuline Academy and a new facility across Navarro Street.
"Yeah, the facility is great," said Justin Boyd, the chair of the sculpture and integrated media department. "You have the beautiful old side of campus and the new side, too."
I asked Valdez if San Antonio is lucky to have such a facility.
"Most definitely," he said. "The fact that the school and the campus are located downtown San Antonio is extremely relevant."
The Southwest School is well positioned to enjoy the success of the city’s downtown boom. Students there enjoy a fine facility, experienced staff, and a few intangibles.
"It also gives the community a chance to come and use tools that you possibly wouldn’t be able to use, or afford in your own home," Boyd said.
