Brubeck Tribute Shows Jazzy Side Of Musical Offerings

Susan Riley

Monday, April 8th and Tuesday, April 9th mark the twenty-first annual Jazz Meets Classical concerts of Musical Offerings.   The performances include traditional classical composers and jazz, and often mix the two genres! This year the theme includes tributes to the great composer and performer Dave Brubeck, who passed last December.

Selections by Brubeck, tailor made for Musical Offerings, will be performed, as well as "Homage a Dave" by San Antonio composer James Scott Balantine, a 2006 work commissioned by Musical Offerings. "We're excited to honor Dave, who was a real classical composer on top of being a great jazzer!" says Joan Christenson, artistic director of Musical Offerings. "We'll play Blue Rondo ala Turk, and Regret - which is so beautiful and haunting, from Classical Brubeck."

Will they do Take 5? "You'll have to be there to see!" quipped Christenson.
