UT put the requirement on hold back in 2020 because of the pandemic. Students seeking admission for the fall 2025 semester will have to submit their SAT or ACT scores.

No other public universities use race as a factor, but Texas private schools like Rice and Southern Methodist University will be impacted.

The decision reverses decades of precedent upheld over the years by narrow court majorities that included Republican-appointed justices.

The justices are re-examining decades of precedent allowing affirmative action policies. This time, however, there is every likelihood that the court will overrule some or all of those precedents.
