SA Tomorrow Progress Report: The City Plans For A Growing San Antonio

SA Tomorrow
Map reflecting planning areas and phases of the SA Tomorrow plan.

San Antonio's framework for city-wide development through 2040 is now a year into production. What was accomplished in 2017?

The San Antonio City Council approved the SA Tomorrow initiative in August 2016, which outlines a comprehensive plan, plus two additional strategies tackling multimodal transportation and sustainability. SA Tomorrow also covers a range of topics from land use to housing to economic development.

The City of San Antonio's planning department is actively working in 5 of 13 designated "regional centers" as of 2017: Downtown, UTSA, Medical Center, Midtown, and the area around Brooks City-base. Seventeen "community areas" were identified to cover the rest of San Antonio.

Although the SA Tomorrow project spans a lengthy 25 years, an urgency to address development in the city is spurred by population growth. An estimated 1.1 million people are expected to move to the Alamo area by 2040.

What do locals want to change about the city and what can new residents expect from San Antonio? Which community needs can be addressed by SA Tomorrow in 2018?

Are we on track to meet the plan's goals for smart, sustainable and equitable growth by 2040?
