Bexar County's rate of attrition has climbed to 28 percent during the 2015-16 academic year - surpassing rates in Houston, Dallas and Austin areas - and the statewide rate increased for the first time in 18 years, according to a report released earlier this month.
Since 1986, the San Antonio-based Intercultural Development Research Association has tracked Texas rates of attrition - the number of students no longer enrolled between freshman and senior years of high school - to monitor school completion rates.
IDRA's report shows that more than 1 out of every 4 students in San Antonio are leaving school before graduation and that large gaps continue to exist between white students and students of color, as they have for decades.
