New appointments to the city's Planning Commission are on hold after some city council members expressed concerns that its composition does not represent San Antonio geographically and lacks diversity in expertise.
The city's charter stipulates that planning commission members be "appointed by the council as nearly as practicable from various areas of the city," but council members say the commission overwhelmingly represents the development community and the North Side.
A Council Consideration request filed by District 1 Councilman Roberto Trevino calls for an appointment process akin to that of the Zoning Commission - council members appoint commissioners to represent their respective districts.
In an interview with the Express-News, Mayor Ivy Taylor said she doesn't disagree with the request, but that changing the charter won't be quick or easy and she wants to move forward to appoint the commission's current candidates.
