Critical Shortage Of Mental Health Care Providers In Texas

Fronteras: There's a critical shortage of mental health care workers in Texas, and the problem is especially apparent in the borderlands. The Texas Democratic Party chair speaks about the party's top candidates, its platform and more as the convention arrives this weekend. For San Antonio artist Cruz Ortiz, culture is everything. He speaks about the inspiration for his Tex-Mex artwork and new exhibit at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.

Texas’ Critical Shortage of Mental Health Professionals

There is a critical shortage of mental health care workers in Texas, and the problem is especially apparent in the borderlands region of West Texas. A bill passed last year is trying to tackle the problem. It called for a report on the reasons behind the shortage and recommendations for how to move forward.

But as Marfa Public Radio's Paige Phelps reports, for mental health care workers in the field, changes can't come soon enough.

Democratic Party Chair Says Texas Convention Will Highlight Women

Three weeks ago Texas Republicans met in Fort Worth. Now, state Democrats are in Dallas through the weekend for their convention. Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa told member station KERA’s Shelley Kofler the goal of the convention is to pump up party activists who will help elect Democrats.  Hinojosa also said it’s a chance to shine a spotlight on the candidates at the top of the ticket.

Deaf Exchange Student Inspires Sign Language Classes At Marshall HS

For the past year an exchange student from the Philippines who is deaf has been living and studying in San Antonio. She's had quite an impact at Marshall High School, which will now offer an American Sign Language course. TPR’s Joey Palacios sat down with her and her host family to talk about her experience in the United States.

San Antonio Artist Cruz Ortiz on New Exhibit “Te Quiero A Lot Mamacitas”

San Antonio artist Cruz Ortiz has an art collection called "Te Quiero A Lot Mamacitas" on display right now at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Ortiz’ art has been on display around the world including in France, Ireland and Puerto Rico. He stopped by the Texas Public Radio studios this week to chat about his latest work and more with Fronteras Host Crystal Chavez.
