The Hospital (and Jim Crow) Killed Barbara's Mother

For more than half the 20th century the South was segregated under Jim Crow laws. Barbara Bowie grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, under those laws. Big changes were coming, big breaks were prayed for. Bowie and her brother worked in the Civil Rights movement since she was 13-years old, but she says she didn't really know why she was doing it. This is the story that changed that.

This track was recorded at the March 7, 2017 Worth Repeating with the theme "Big Breaks and Busts." Worth Repeating is Texas Public Radio's live storytelling event series.
